PROGRAM STATEMENT
The student affairs concentration focuses on the connections between theory and
practice related to college students. In this concentration, students are
expected to connect theoretical and conceptual understanding of student affairs
leadership, administration, and college student development to administrative
practice through coursework, practica, and other experiences. Students are
additionally expected to develop competency within the following general areas:
diversity, social justice, student development, persistence, student outcomes,
and/or community college contexts. This concentration prepares students to
assume entry-level to mid-level administrative student affairs positions across
college and university types. More specifically, students are prepared to assume
leadership roles in such areas as student services, intercollegiate athletics
administration, residence life, financial aid, counseling, Greek life, student
activities, orientation, career placement, and student development.
PROGRAM MISSION
The student affairs concentration in the Adult and Higher Education program is
committed to helping students understand how colleges and universities work, the
issues affecting college students and faculty, and how to best lead our colleges
and universities to meet the challenges of our global and changing diverse
democracy. Students will be challenged intellectually to consider the
intersections of theory, research, and practice as they develop integrity,
courage, and vision to advance social justice and educational equity in the
field.
PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
Program uniqueness includes the tracks within the overarching student affairs
program. Namely, social justice and community college tracks within the student
affairs program represent a program in touch with the everchanging nature of
student affairs in colleges statewide, regionally, and nationally.
