PROGRAM STATEMENT
The College
Student Personnel Program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has been in
operation for more than 20 years. It is the only graduate program in the state
of Tennessee that directly prepares entry-level college student personnel
administrators to serve the student and administrative needs of colleges and
universities.
The program is designed to individuals interested in entering higher education administration in those areas that serve students and lend support to the effective operation of the higher education institution. The CSP program is designed to be completed in two years, emphasizes experiential learning, and provides excellent opportunities for practicum experiences throughout the University and at neighboring colleges and universities.
Faculty serving the program are a diverse group of scholars and practitioners with a variety of both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in higher education, student affairs, first-year studies, law and administration. Students come to our program from a variety of geographic areas, undergraduate institutions, and academic disciplines. Upon graduating from our program, they are highly successful in securing employment in a variety of positions in the student affairs profession.
PROGRAM MISSION
The Master’s
program in College Student Personnel at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
is a two-year practitioner-oriented program, philosophically based in college
and university administration. It is designed to prepare thoughtful,
compassionate first-line student and university service administrators armed
with the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to begin a career in the
variety of settings in which such services are needed. These include but are not
limited to admission, career counseling, advising, financial aid, orientation,
housing, alumni affairs, and development.
The CSP Program is values-based and draws on those values in the construction and delivery of the program components. The program draws on the expertise of practitioners in the field, involving them in the teaching, advising, and supervision of research in concert with full-time faculty. Problem-based learning is used as an instructional and curricular strategy in several courses, and the concluding activities (thesis or problems in lieu of thesis and comprehensive examination) involve the entire faculty working with students on original field-oriented projects and devising practice-related plans for real-world situations.
PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
Students in the College Student
Personnel Program at the University of Tennessee receive all the benefits of a
large state university along with individualized attention in a small, cohort
program.
