Hello CCAPS Colleagues,
You never know what will
happen next.
About 25 years ago, as I
was sitting at my desk at a small liberal arts university--Southwestern
University, located in Georgetown, Texas-- where I was Director of
Counseling Services, I received a phone call “out of the blue”. On the
other end of the line, a very pleasant female voice with a heavy Southern
accent introduced herself as Dr. Janis Booth, Director of Counseling
Services at Millsaps University, Jackson, Mississippi. Janis said that she
was submitting a proposal for a panel at the ACPA annual convention about
the issues facing small college counseling centers. She asked if I would be
interested in joining the panel. Of course I said “yes”. Our panel
presented for a number of years at ACPA until I took my current position in
1992 as Associate Director of The University of Texas Counseling and Mental
Health Center (which pretty much disqualified me as a member of a small
college counseling center panel!) But—my association with ACPA and CCAPS
remained strong due to the amazing/warm/passionate/competent group of mental
health professionals who I’d come to know and love, the quality convention
programming, the CE’s, the opportunities for professional growth and making
a positive contribution to college mental health and much more.
This year CCAPS celebrates
its 50th anniversary and I know that my story is one of thousands
that reflect the positive impact that this organization has had--- not only
on CCAPS members themselves but on the many lives (colleagues, faculty,
staff, students and others) that were touched as a result of their
membership. For example, how many students’ lives have been affected by
direct application of the innovative approaches learned from attending Tom
Magoon’s “Innovations in Counseling” panel, the longest-running convention
program sponsored by CCAPS?
What an honor it is to be
able to be part of a 50th anniversary planning team whose work
over the past year has been to develop and implement a joyous 50th
celebration. A special “shout out” to 50th
Anniversary Committee members Carol Bershad, Vivian Boyd, Steve Brown,
Jocelyn Buhain, Sherry Conrad, Chanda Corbett, Kelly Case-Simonson, Jim
Dolan, Jonathan Kandell, Heidi Levine, Stacey Pearson, Toti Perez, and Sue
Stock for all their
enthusiasm, creativity and hard work! And, a huge thanks to our awesome
CCAPS sponsors who have turned our celebration dreams into reality with
their generous donations. A complete list of our sponsors can be found at:
http://www.myacpa.org/comm/ccaps/50th.cfm
We have so many wonderful
components planned for our celebration---from a complete written history of
CCAPS’ 50 years which will be posted on our CCAPS website, to the creation
of a “Profiles” project on the website spotlighting key individuals who have
made major contributions to CCAPS over the years, to a three-part convention
Institute (on Tuesday) addressing the past, present and future of
CCAPS/college mental health, to our extra special CCAPS Tuesday evening
Social (including our awards ceremony honoring outstanding mental health
professionals and programs as well as the premier showing of a video
created to highlight our 50 years). All of this on top of our exceptional
CCAPS convention programs, extensive CE opportunities, “meet and greet”
opportunities, CCAPS meetings, Showcase presence and more! I also want to
give a special welcome to our Higher Education Mental Health Alliance
colleagues who CCAPS is sponsoring this year here at ACPA! Keep
checking our CCAPS website for convention updates:

So, please come to the
convention and get involved in CCAPS! Connect, re-connect, learn, share,
grow, have fun.
You never know what will
happen next.
