Message from the Chair

Dear Colleagues:
As this semester/ quarter flies by, I want to bring to your attention the continued fine work of our commission members who are frequently are at the center of modeling and practicing innovative work in terms of graduate preparation, professional development, and teaching-learning of the students we serve.  I would argue that embedded in these efforts are the recognition and value of collaborative partnerships, across the student affairs profession and higher education community.  The white paper written by commission members Michael Coomes, Maureen Wilson, and Janice Gerda entitled “Of Vision, Values and Voices: Consolidating ACPA and NASPA” was a key stimuli for these organizations to discuss in very serious and important ways the benefits of consolidation.  Although, a decision was made not to consolidate at this time, a commitment to identify collaborative projects was made.  Many members of our Commission have had memberships and assumed significant leadership roles in both associations for years.  We have a long history of finding a voice in places that make sense for advancing our profession and the lives of college students.  We know how to model collaboration and I am confident our members will be at the center of identifying and promoting future initiatives.  For example, we have had and will continue to have conversations with the NASPA Fellows about possible ventures regarding the Graduate Preparation Directory.  We have benefited enormously for over 15 years from the support of Kansas State University in managing our syllabi clearinghouse.  We now are exploring possibly partnerships with the AERA-I and ASHE regarding their web-based syllabi clearinghouse.  Also, John Lowery, NASPA Board member-at-large, has shared a proposal for a new website to serve as starting point or portal for students considering a career in student affairs. He is encouraging this venture to be a shared endeavor between the two organizations.  In response to these activities, many of which are inter-related, Jan Arminio, Chair of the NASPA Fellows, and I are in the process of appointing a small taskforce to examine these possible areas for collaboration and to develop a proposal for our review in Philadelphia.  Feel free to forward me any feedback about how we can make our professional development opportunities more accessible to potential new members of our profession and faculty (including our critical numbers of fabulous adjunct faculty) who are promoting our field.  Continue your good work!
