Editors' Notes

Welcome to the first issue of E-NEWS, the electronic version of the Commission XII newsletter. As this foray into electronic publishing is a first for us and the commission, we hope you will patiently endure any mistakes, delays, or other complications that might occur in the process of trying to get this project off the ground. We're eager to get your feedback--both constructive and complimentary--so feel free to contact us with your reactions to this and subsequent issues.

We'd like to remind you that E-NEWS is sent every other month only to the commission members who have specifically requested to be subscribed to it. Other commission members will be mailed a paper copy of the commission newsletter only two or three times a year. If you would like to subscribe to E-NEWS, contact either one of us; we will forward your request to John Salzman at ACPA Headquarters. John has been exceedingly helpful to us in arranging the subscription and delivery of E-NEWS to our membership. Finally, we'd like to thank those commission members and other ACPA members who provide the information we include. This newsletter could not exist without their faithful contributions and ongoing commitment to the commission's work.

From the Chair

Christine Phelps-Tobin

Greetings from the Chair......

I write to you upon the heels of the 1997 Midwest Meeting of Graduate Students in Student Personnel (MMOGSISP) meeting held at Western Michigan University October 8-10. The WMU students did an outstanding job of coordinating and hosting an excellent meeting for many students and faculty from the midwest region. Many thanks also to Donna Talbot, our Chair-Elect, for coordinating the faculty component of the meeting. These meetings always help to rejuvinate, inform, and support our graduate students and our graduate preparation educators. The 1998 MMOGSISP conference will be held at Iowa State University in November, which is the first time the meeting will be held west of the Mississippi River. Please plan to attend!

In addition to MMOGSISP, I recently attended the second meeting of the Commission XII Quality Enhancement Task Force. This group was assembled in March as a result of the discussion on quality assurance at the open afternoon Commission XII meeting. Our first meeting was held in June, at which time we discussed how the commission could contribute to the quality assurance agenda, primarily through the vehicle of the Commission XII sponsored Directory of Graduate Preparation Programs. The second meeting allowed us an opportunity to further develop our ideas and plans, and to continue drafting documents that will forward the quality enhancement agenda. Members of this group include several directorate members, as well as other commission members. They are Will Barratt, Delight Champagne, Flo Guido DiBrito, Wallace Eddy, Joan Hirt, Patrick Love, Dawn Person, John Schuh, Donna Talbot, Chris Tobin, Lemuel Watson, and Doug Woodard. You will be receiving additional information from us soon.

Convention Update: The 1998 ACPA convention will be held Saturday, March 14-Wednesday, March 18 in St. Louis. Planning is well underway for this meeting. Commission XII will be sponsoring and/or involved with five conference programs, two swap shops, three roundtables, and one preconference workshop related to issues of professional preparation. This year's conference theme is Gateway to Learning: Promoting Student Success - with our students, through our profession, and in our environment. Please plan to join us!

New at this year's convention will be a program entitled ACPA: The Next Generation. This conference will be held before the convention in St. Louis, and is geared toward college juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing graduate study in student affairs and higher education. Read on to learn how you can nominate students and be involved as a session facilitator!

Included in this newsletter is information about our upcoming commission directorate and officer nominations and elections. If you are interested in nominating yourself or a colleague, please contact Donna Talbot (Chair-Elect), Dea Forney (Past Chair), or myself to discuss these rewarding involvment opportunities. All nominations are due by November 14! We value and appreciate your involvement and thoughtfulness in this very important process.

Also included in this newsletter is information about the new and revised syllabi clearinghouse catalogue and our annual student writing awards. Order your new catalogue today, and start preparing your students to submit papers for the writing awards.

A final note - if you would like to become involved in the Commission, we have many opportunities for you to participate. If there is a project that you would like to see the Commission take on, please feel free to contact me. I welcome your suggestions!
