Report from the Commission XII Chair

Patrick Love, Associate Professor, New York University

I hope everyone has had a successful start to a new year. As many of you know, I moved from Kent State University and the Midwest to New York University and the NYC metropolitan area. Gee, no adjustment needed there! Actually, the transition has been about as smooth as one can hope for, though I am still in the midst of a steep learning curve. My new contact information is:

Patrick Love
Associate Professor of Higher Education
East Building, Suite 300
239 Greene St.
New York University
New York, NY 10003,
w(212)998-5524, h(973)761-7685

People are hard at work on various commission projects. For those of you not on the directorate, but wishing to get involved, please let me know and I will see if there are those working on projects who could use some help. One such task involves the program directory website. We need someone for the very important task of working with and updating this website. Mike Coomes who has ably served in that position has decided to pass it onto someone else. I would appreciate a volunteer or nominations. It does not necessarily need to be a member of the directorate. Do you know someone who would like to get involved with the commission and who might be interested in taking this on? Please let me know.

Other Items:

  1. The Educational Leadership Foundation (ELF) is launching a grants program. The initiatives they are most interested in supporting are in the areas of student learning, leadership, assessment, and service learning. They will be making multiple awards in the $1500-2000 range. The two annual deadlines are January and May. Keep an eye on the ACPA website for more information.

  2. Reminder - the Professional Development Core Council has money for professional development initiatives.

  3. I am participating (along with Delight) on the Professional Issues Core Council. Their focus for the present and future is on assessing student learning outcomes and using assessment data to shape our practice. The work being done there will dovetail nicely with our efforts in the Quality Enhancement arena. They will be a good supporter of our work.
