ACPA Professional Preparation Commission Newsletter

Spring 2004

March 2004

Volume 7, Number 2

The leaves are beginning to bud, the sun is shining (in some places) and it's time for us to seek solace in the company of our colleagues and friends.  As we commence our travels, we wanted to inform Commission members and others of what's going on in TCFKACXII (The Commission Formerly Known as Commission 12), around ACPA, at the ACPA convention in Philadelphia, and around the nation!  Enjoy!

Message from Our Chair

Dear Colleagues:

As I turn the "gavel" over to Deb Taub this spring, I want to thank the Professional Preparation Commission, particularly the Directorate members and long-standing contributors and supporters, for your tireless work, keen wisdom, and commitment to promoting the health and vigor of our profession. Your contributions to the Commission are noticed and valued. I and so many others are better faculty because of what we learned and gain from one another. Our programs, awards, and major initiatives continue to sustain exemplary faculty and graduate student work. Thanks! And I have to publicly acknowledge Patrick Love for our first on-line web election, and more importantly, his steadfast passions, commitments, and inspiring leadership over the years. Periodically, I curse him for getting rid of Commission XII’s name but we all have benefited from leadership in pushing for quality enhancement in our graduate programs and the profession. I often comment that the role of preparation faculty is to be the conscience and visionaries of our profession. Patrick models this role with excitement and finesse. Thanks Patrick!

As we head into the Spring Convention, I hope each of you will take the time to join us at the day-long Commission Meeting on Friday, April 2nd (my son’s birthday J ) at the Marriott Room 309 from 9-4 p.m. Note, we voted last year to not spend any monies on hotel coffee/ food so make that stop to your favorite coffee stand before our meeting begins. I am delighted that Maureen Wilson was able to stomp over all her competitors and she will do an banner job leading the helm in 2006-08. The breadth of experiences, talents, and research interests represented by Marcy Roe, Jeni Hart, Frankie Santo Laanan, and Janice Gerda will really enrich our group. Welcome!

We will be addressing some important issues for the Commission at the Directorate meeting and your involvement in these discussions is critical. We will discuss ways in which we can work more collaboratively with our NASPA Fellow colleagues, particularly related to the Graduate Directory. We will discuss future directions of the Syllabi Clearinghouse, and ways in which we currently are and HOPE to support ACPA’s strategic plan. With discussions of an ACPA-NASPA merger on long-term "hold", it is critical we align our efforts with the Association’s.

I look forward to seeing you all in Philly and thanks again for all your support!

Cathy

Directory of Graduate Programs is Updated for 2003-2005
Submitted by Michael Coomes, Bowling Green State University and Janice Gerda, Kent State University

http://www.myacpa.org/c12/directory.htm

The Directory of Graduate Programs Preparing Student Affairs Professionals has been updated! The 2003-2005 edition of the Directory includes more programs, has information current to 2003-2004, offers updated advice in the Considering a Career in Student Affairs and Selecting a Student Affairs Graduate Program sections, and sports a new streamlined look. Another change you’ll find is a more inclusive list of colleges and universities having graduate programs that prepare student affairs professionals. Visitors are informed that "linked listings have provided detailed information about their programs and are particularly interested in attracting students pursuing a career in student affairs. Unlinked universities are believed to offer a relevant graduate program, but information has not been submitted to this Directory."

We currently have almost 120 institutions with programs listed, and 75 of those are subscribers, linked to current information in a common format. Another 15 have contacted us and are in the process of subscribing. We think this provides an excellent online resource for prospective students, prospective faculty members, scholars of student affairs professional preparation, and others who want to know about our graduate programs.

Not listed? It’s not too late! We are accepting new entries on a rolling basis. A program representative must submit current information and pay a listing fee of $100. The listing fee provides for online inclusion until 2005 and technical support for updating information that changes during that time period. To get started, just contact Mike Coomes, mcoomes@bgnet.bgsu.edu.

Please note: Members of the Professional Preparation Commission are aware that higher education budgets have been severely curtailed and that some graduate programs might not be able to afford the listing fee. Small grants from the Profession Preparation Commission are available. To discuss eligibility, please contact Mike Coomes or Commission Chair Cathy Engstrom, Cmengstr@syr.edu.

Professional Issues Core Council
Submitted by Delight Champagne, PICC Commission Representative

The Professional Issues Core Council has been providing a website for ACPA members interested in resources related to violence and personal safety.  Among the resources listed are links to programs and agencies related to terrorism, interpersonal violence, war, and other issues which affect the safety and well-being of our students on campus and in their lives.  Prevention programs, coping strategies, and educational resources are all listed.  Some of the resources were obtained at a roundtable discussion offered at last year's convention.

Delight Champagne, Preparation Program Representative to the PICC, is seeking additional resources for the site.  Of particular interest are curricular and training programs that assist our students in dealing with crises and situations in which their safety is threatened.  Models and best practices of campus programs that promote student safety are also welcome.

A convention program titled, "Safe enough to learn?: College environments in violent times," will be offered at the convention as a culmination of the Violence and Personal Safety Project.  Any input or ideas that commission members would like to share can be sent to Delight_Champagne@spfldcol.edu.
