Commission for Student Involvement Awards

Research Award

What is the Research Award?
Each year the Commission for Student Involvement offers one or two $500 research awards toward a study that expands the boundaries of knowledge concerning a focus, effort, or emphasis on issues/trends that affects student involvement.

What is the Commission on Student Involvement?
Efforts of the Commission are directed toward a deeper understanding of college students and their characteristics, purposes, attitudes, behaviors, mores, and campus/community lifestyles. A major emphasis of the Commission’s work is on the integration of co-curricular activities with academic curricula. The commission fulfills its mission through convention programming, research, and ongoing task force efforts aimed at advancing and advocating the development of more visible student organizations, activities, programs, and leadership education opportunities.

Who is eligible?
All ACPA members are eligible. Graduate students are especially encouraged to apply. Commission membership is not required.

Member Awards

Each year the Commission has the opportunity to recognize contributions to the Association, the Commission, and to the general student affairs profession. CSI has five awards for which you are able to nominate yourself or your peers.

These awards recognize the contributions and enthusiasm of new professionals and graduate students who work and/or conduct research, those who have made a significant impact upon their department and/or campus through specific initiatives or by way of their day-to-day interactions with students and staff. The awards also attempt to acknowledge any regional and/or national involvement in the field.

The Outstanding New Professional Award

This award seeks to acknowledge the individual who has made a significant impact upon students, their department, and/or campus through specific initiatives or by way of their day-to-day interactions with others. The award also attempts to acknowledge regional and/or national participation in the field.
Nominee Criteria:

  • Must be a member of ACPA and Commission IV
  • Has been working in the field 0–3 years
  • Currently working in a Commission IV functional area

Please include one letter of support explaining why you believe the nominee is worthy of receiving this award. Please provide specific examples to illustrate the nominee’s outstanding qualities.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award

This award seeks to acknowledge the individual who has made a significant impact upon students, their department, and/or campus through specific initiatives or by way of their day-to-day interactions with others. The award also attempts to acknowledge regional and/or national participation in the field.
Nominee Criteria:

  • Must be a member of ACPA and Commission IV
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in a related area
  • Must work or conduct research in a Commission IV functional area

Please include one letter of support explaining why you believe the nominee is worthy of receiving this award. Please provide specific examples to illustrate the nominee’s outstanding qualities. Make sure to provide nominee’s degree being sought.

The Mid-Level Outstanding Professional Award

The Mid-Level Outstanding Professional Award will be presented to a professional staff member from an ACPA member institution. This award recipient will be an individual who:

  • Has been employed as a professional staff member in the field of student affairs for longer than four years
  • Has demonstrated commitment to the profession through work both at his/her institution and through professional organizations
  • Is viewed by colleagues as an educator
  • Displays genuine support and regard for students
  • Involvement in and contributions to ACPA
  • Involvement in and contribution to the field of campus activities: Student Organizations, Community Service/Service Learning, Leadership, and Greek Affairs
  • Nominees must be currently employed as a full-time (at least 9 months/year) professional staff member at a college or university

Please include at least two letters of support for this nomination, one of which should be from a student and one from the nominee’s supervisor and/or from colleagues/peers in the field.

Program of the Year

The Program of the Year Award honors an ACPA Institution for an innovative program conceived by the campus that exceeds programming expectations in one of these areas: Student Organizations, Community Service/Service Learning, Leadership, and Greek Affairs. The award is based on student involvement, creativity and the success of the program, as determined by the achievement of the stated program goals. Supporting documents to include in the nomination include posters, flyers, letters of support from the advisor and at least one student, and any other program material.

Outstanding Service to the Commission

The Outstanding Service to the Commission Award honors a professional staff member who has displayed exemplary service and commitment of time and energy to both the Commission for Student Involvement and the profession. The recipient has given outstanding service to the Commission, upheld professional standards showing integrity, and holds the esteem and appreciation of colleagues, students and peers. Any ACPA member may submit a nomination, but only ACPA Commission for Student Involvement members may be nominated. This person will be selected based on the following:

  • Nominee’s activities in the Commission for Student Involvement
  • Leadership position(s) within the Commission for Student Involvement
  • Contributions to his/her campus and/or agency

Please include at least two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a member of the Commission for Student Involvement and the nominee’s supervisor and/or colleagues/peers in the field.
