Reflections on the Drive-In Conference "Theory to Practice to Outcomes"

On Thursday, July 16, 2015, I was in Baltimore for the Morgan State University, ACPA and National Council on Student Development (NCSD) Drive In Conference entitled “Theory to Practice to Outcomes: Connecting Student Development Theory to Community College Practice." The day started with Dr. Lee Knefelkamp, Professor Emerita of Psychology and Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College.

On this Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day in the United States, a federal holiday for remembering people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.  Originally, this day of remembrance was known as Declaration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate solders who died in that war.  S.M Sigerson provides a moment of reflection for us today as we remember and consider situations around the world and in our own nation.

On Monday, 11 May 2015, I will represent ACPA at a meeting with Steve Berry, Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBT Persons for the State Department. This conversation about human rights for all people takes place on the International Day Against Transphobia, Homophobia  and Biphobia and is hosted by the United Nations Foundation.

OCR issues Title IX update

28 April 2015

TIME SENSITIVE INFORMATION

Dear Colleagues:

On 24 April 2015, the US Department of Education Office for Civil Rights issued new information for support of Title IX Coordinators on school districts, college and university campuses.  The DOE reminds all institutions receiving Federal financial assistance that they must designate at least one employee to coordinate compliance and other responsibilities under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 in addition to clarification on previous publications based on questions by institutions.

ACPA's Response to Indiana's of RFR Act

We want to provide a brief update on ACPA’s on-going response to Indiana's passage and subsequent revision of its Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This legislation catalyzed coast-to-coast controversy.  Opponents believed it would give business owners the license to discriminate against LGBT identified persons.
