Developing social justice allies is a critical component of movements towards social justice at our colleges and universities, as well as our societies in general. How can we better engage our students in their identities of dominance in order to become more committed and effective allies?
ACPA invites you to join us as we address this important question at the Institute for Social Justice Ally Development in Student Affairs, to be held June 25-27, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa.
This institute will feature a structured, sequenced curriculum designed and guided by the institute faculty.
Institute participants will gain:
- Foundational knowledge regarding definitions and theories of social justice ally development;
- Specific knowledge of ally development with regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, class, disability and religion;
- Strategies for engaging students in social justice activities in general and with respect to the five areas mentioned above;
- Practice designing experiences that foster social justice ally development in various functional areas of student affairs
- Opportunities to network and develop self-care and self-survival skills.
Ellen M. Broido is an Associate Professor in the College Student Personnel and Higher Education Administration programs at Bowling Green State University. Ellen has worked in higher education in a number of roles, as a residence hall director, judicial coordinator, general education faculty, and coordinator of student affairs-academic affairs partnerships. She received her doctorate in Counselor Education from Pennsylvania State University and has taught at Penn State, Portland State University, and Bowling Green State University. Her research interests span a variety of topics relating to social justice issues in higher education, with particular focus on students' development of social justice attitudes and behaviors, and the development of students from targeted social groups.

Nancy J. Evans is a professor of higher education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Iowa State University, coordinator of the master's program in student affairs, and co-coordinator of the doctoral concentration in social justice in higher education. She received her doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri in 1978 and previously taught at Indiana University, Western Illinois University, and Penn State University. She served as President of the American College Personnel Association in 2001-02, received the Contribution to Knowledge Award from ACPA in 1998, and was named an ACPA Senior Scholar in 1999. She has published seven books, including Student Development in College, Foundations of Student Affairs Practice, and most recently Developing Social Justice Allies, along with numerous book chapters and journal articles. Her research and scholarship focuses on social justice in higher education and the impact of the college environment on student development, particularly with regard to the experiences of nondominant populations, including lesbian, gay, and bisexual students and students with disabilities.

Robert D. Reason is Professor-in-Charge of the College Student Affairs program; Research Associate, Center for the Study of Higher Education; and an Assistant Professor of Education at Penn State. Prior to returning to his doctoral studies at Iowa State University, he spent 7 years as a student affairs practitioner, primarily in residence life. He teaches courses related to student development in college, research & assessment in higher education, and students in American higher education. Concerned about student outcomes and success at all educational levels, Dr. Reason studies the influence of college experiences in the development of social justice attitudes.

Penny J. Rice is the Director of the Margaret Sloss Women's Center and a Doctoral Candidate in Higher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) at Iowa State University. She is also a student editorial board member of (ELPS) Education Policy and Practice Perspectives - EP3 - a bi-annual, multidisciplinary publication that is devoted to new trends in higher education. She received her MS in Counseling and Student Personnel from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1997 and her BS in Psychology/Women's Studies in 1994. Before arriving at the Women's Center at ISU, Penny was the Director of Off Campus and Adult Student Services at ISU and the Director of Adult and Graduate Student Services at Texas A&M University. She received the Iowa Board of Regents Award for Staff Excellence in 2007 and the Outstanding Social Justice Teacher, Trainer, Mentor Award in 2007 from ACPA's Commission for Social Justice Educators. Her dissertation topic is focused on developing college-aged men as social justice allies. Other research interests include access to higher education of low-income women and adult learners in higher education. |

The Institute for Social Justice Ally Development in Student Affairs will be hosted at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des Moines, Iowa. Registrations can be paid by check, VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express. All fees must be prepaid. Purchase orders are not accepted. Refunds will be given for cancellations, received in writing at ACPA by June 13, 2008 less a US$35 processing fee. After June 13, there are no refunds. ACPA reserves the right to charge a service fee of US$50 for returned checks. A processing fee of $20 per registration will be charged for credit cards declined or to change payment methods after the initial payment is processed. Registrations are non-transferable. The conference may be cancelled or postponed due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. In this case, the fees will be fully refunded; however, ACPA will not be responsible for other additional costs, charges or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines and/or travel agencies.
