Overview of the Conference

As higher education professionals living in a global society, it is our collective responsibility to facilitate a living and learning environment for which we strive to develop understanding and respect for each other. We must also foster programs and services that shape policies and patterns of behavior and communication which promote the value of each individual as well as the diverse groups within our campus communities.

What began four years ago by Robert Page and the staff at the University of Kansas as the “Tools for Social Justice” conference, this annual institute will help you go "Beyond the Typical" tools and rhetoric when it comes to social justice education. The institute will provide you with best practices and resources that you can bring back to your home campus. With experts from our field, learn or refine ways to address the challenges of infusing social justice into your everyday activities and conversations. This group of insightful and experienced speakers will also share their wisdom and expertise. You will learn about cutting edge and innovative campus programs and will be provided resources to help you implement or reshape programs back on your home campus. Plus, and more importantly, we'll encourage you to learn from one another. We've designed an experience that goes beyond the "typical" conference scene to hit at the heart of the issues while also offering real-life tools to help you leverage social justice education on your campus. By educating ourselves - and our students - we can create a just global society where every person is valued.

Please join us for this exciting annual Institute on Social Justice to put your commitment to social justice education into action!

Target Audience

It is open to all college student educators at all levels --student affairs professionals, faculty, administrators, undergraduate and graduate students--who are interested in and committed to building healthy, diverse communities throughout the world.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The primary purpose of this institute is to build our collective responsibility to facilitate a living and learning environment for which we all strive, and to develop understanding and respect for each other. Toward that end, the conference will bring together national experts, scholars, and student affairs practitioners at all career levels, institutional types and functional areas. Institute attendees can expect to:

  1. Learn or refine ways to address the challenges of infusing social justice into their campus work with students and others;
  2. Increase their knowledge about assessing learning outcomes of social justice programs and services;
  3. Learn from others' experiences through sessions that showcase examples of best practices from a variety of institutional types and functional areas;
  4. Increase their knowledge on the intersection of theory and practice in social justice education; and
  5. Network with college student educators from a variety of institutional types who are committed to learning and reflecting about implementing and enhancing social justice education programs

Featured Opening Workshop – Foundations of Social Justice Education

The Social Justice Training Institute (SJTI) will help us begin to develop our learning community as we focus on how to use the “self as instrument” in our work as social justice educators and change agents. During this interactive opening session we’ll begin to explore how the common dynamics of dominant and subordinated groups impact us as instruments of change. Come ready for self-reflection and authentic dialogue!

You can begin reflecting on the following:

  1. What is your vision of social justice? How are you working to create a more socially just campus environment?
  2. What dynamics and issues related to social justice are you noticing in your organization and in your community?
  3. What, if any, challenges and roadblocks are you experiencing (in yourself and on your campus) as you work to create a more socially just campus community?

Evanston/North Shore

Wide sandy beaches, historic mansions on landscaped boulevards, tree-lined bicycle paths, beautiful parks and the world-renowned Northwestern University make Evanston a popular lakefront destination. Evanston is easily accessible by both Chicago's elevated train system (affectionately known as the "el") and Metra, the commuter rail system servicing the suburbs.

Once here, you're sure to appreciate all that Evanston has to offer especially its wonderful hotel accommodations. Centered around the heart of downtown, accommodations range from luxury hotels to the old world-charm of a vintage bed and breakfast. Evanston features hundreds of rooms and special rates to accommodate all of your overnight needs.

Evanston also prides itself on its tremendous variety of dining options. You won't walk more than a few feet without spotting a restaurant! From award-winning Italian cuisine and Japanese sushi to French, Asian and regional American specialties, Evanston's restaurants promise an exciting culinary experience guaranteed to satisfy even the most sophisticated palate.

You'll be equally impressed with Evanston's unique, one-of-a-kind shopping districts. Shop till you drop as you make your way through the city's bustling downtown or make time to visit any of Evanston's signature neighborhood stores and boutiques, each with their own unique style and flare.

If you appreciate art and entertainment then Evanston is place for you! This rich cultural community is home to numerous theaters and performance halls, as well as dozens of art galleries and museums. Be sure to visit the Evanston Historical Society located in the magnificent Charles Gates Dawes House, a chateau-style mansion overlooking Lake Michigan (Dawes was the 30th Vice President of the United States and his home has since became a national historic landmark). You'll also want to see the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, on the campus of Northwestern University, as well as the famed Mitchell Museum of the American Indian.

But if relaxing in the most beautiful of settings is more your speed, then nothing could be more delightful than a quiet stroll along Evanston's spectacular lakefront. The city's beaches offer breathtaking views of Chicago and also feature a variety of activities including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and boating. One of seven lighthouses to hold National Landmark Status, the Grosse Point Lighthouse has stood watch over Evanston's Lake Michigan shoreline since 1873!

With over 80 parks and playgrounds, many of which are located directly on the lakefront, Evanston is recreational gem. During the spring and summer, the city hosts dozens of street fairs, festivals and exciting neighborhood events all waiting to welcome you.

We urge students, faculty and staff to deepen their own faiths and to learn and appreciate the faiths of others. We encourage everyone in our university community to live out their personal calling to address the injustices around them. We hope the following information on our work in Mission and Identity provides you a better understanding of the Jesuit Catholic identity of Loyola University Chicago. Learn more about us and our mission of preparing people to lead extraordinary lives.
