A Message from the Chair
Helen Alatorre
Welcome to the Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs. We’re off to Atlanta, Georgia taking part in this year’s annual convention and most importantly, celebrating our 40th Anniversary.
Our committee is one of 5 Standing Committees within ACPA and we’ve been working very hard in preparation of this year’s festivities. We were founded on April 11, 1968 as the Task Force on Race and the College Community and have since grown into what is now known as a Standing Committee. We are comprised of 5 networks: Asian Pacific American Network, Latin@ Network, Multiracial Network, Native American Network, and Pan African Network.
This year has been quite busy in preparation for our 40th Anniversary Celebration (Please take a moment to review the Convention Information available at the link above). All that we’ve accomplished would not have been possible without the dedicated service of this year’s Directorate members and their respective committee members and directorates. Their work does not go unnoticed and I’m very thankful to call them my mentors, colleagues, and friends. Thank you for your hard work and commitment.
As we look to the future, the Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs recommits to its Core Values:
• Celebration: Continuing to celebrate the accomplishments of people
of color within student affairs and higher education;
• Advocacy: Striving to provide an inclusive environment in higher
education, responsive to the needs and identities of its members;
• Recognition: Recognizing the diversity present within communities
of color and higher education communities;
• Education: Continuing to raise awareness about multicultural education
and the concerns of people of color within student affairs and
higher education;
• Support: Supporting the ongoing goal of inclusion, understanding
and dignity in student affairs and higher education.
We hope you’ll join us at this year’s convention and take part in creating our vision for the next 40 years.
What's a Standing Committee?
Standing Committees are subdivisions of ACPA designed to represent various constituencies and their interests. As such, Standing Committees serve as a vehicle for: (1) education of the Association and, through the Association, of higher education, and (2) advocacy by members of those groups. We are 1 of 5 Standing Committees within ACPA. |
