Letter from the Co-President
Greetings to all ACPA members in the state of Arizona!
We wanted to let you know that the Arizona division of ACPA is on the way back. A small group has been meeting to "dust off" our state bylaws and begin to plan some statewide events. We'd like to start small to begin with and then build as we get our feet back on the ground. Our thanks to the many out there who have said "I was a member of the Arizona division in the past and would like to help out in the future." This newsletter comes to you electronically to help keep you connected with these state efforts and to let everyone know how they can get involved. Below are four quick points to keep you up to date on our work:
(1) We've made some important preliminary decisions. Earlier, we tried holding the Coordinating Committee meetings in several locations across the state. We still plan to do this for several programs but for regular meetings, the travel time from north to south proved to be a challenge! So, for the summer and for at least fall semester, the Coordinating Committee meetings will be held in the Phoenix area, centrally located in the state. We will rotate the location of these meetings among several Phoenix institutions so that no one institution or institution type is favored (or becomes our "victim" depending on how you look at it!)
(2) We welcome additional people at Coordinating Committee meetings, which are "open."
(3) The agenda for each Coordinating Committee meeting will be posted on the AzCPA website, as will meeting locations and the name and contact information for the meeting "host." If you think you'd like to attend a Coordinating Committee meeting, contact the host for additional information about directions, parking, etc. Generally, we meet once a month on the third or fourth Friday of the month from 10 AM to 12 Noon. See the website at http://www.acpa.nche.edu/states/AZ for exact dates, times and locations.
(4) At our July 13 Coordinating Committee meeting, we hope to include a brief program, "How to Submit a Program Proposal for the ACPA March 2002 Convention in Long Beach, California." You are WELCOME and ENCOURAGED to attend this July 13 meeting! Contact the host, Karen Casselbury for further information at karen.casselbury@phoenix.edu.
For now, enjoy this edition of the AzCPA newsletter. We welcome your involvement as we move forward. Please feel free to contact me directly with questions, ideas, etc. at Alice.Mitchell@asu.edu.
Best wishes.
Alice A. Mitchell, Ph.D.
Interim Co-President, AzCPA

National Issues and Topics in Higher Ed.

According to the "President to President Update" distributed by the ACPA National Office on May 15th, the congressional approval of the 2002 fiscal budget is one of the hottest national issues facing higher education institutions. Due to minimal educational funding, many higher education associations, including ACPA, have expressed resistance to the fiscal year 2002 budget.

The U.S. Postal service recently announced an additional rate increase, effective July 1, which includes the non-profit rate most
colleges and universities currently utilize for postal mailings. The rate increase, a second since January,
compounds the financial load of most institutions.

Also noted in the Update, this is the first year the Higher Education Act of 1998's denial of federal student aid to people with drug convictions will impact entering students. Members of the higher education community have opposed the stipulation since its infancy and several members of the community are trying to have the clause overturned.

Evident by the recent series of articles on electronic textbooks and libraries found in The Chronicle of Higher Education, technology and its impact on the college campus remains a current national and local topic of discussion. Additional areas of review identified in a search of higher education related web sites are student drinking policies and incidents, conditions in residential halls, gains by women in the profession, diversity education, plagiarism in the classroom and student protest on college campuses.

Looking Ahead to
Long Beach 2002

Start making plans now to attend the 2002 National Convention, "Voices of Wisdom: Stories of Inclusion, Practice, & Scholarship!" Conference dates are March 16-20, and the conference site in Long Beach, California offers great opportunities to enjoy a "working vacation" while we share our stories with others through workshops, interest sessions, and informal conversations.

As we take some time at the end of the year to reflect on our experiences, please consider sharing your experiences with others at the convention by presenting a program. The Call for Programs for ACPA 2002 will be available at the ACPA website (www.acpa.nche.edu) and mailed on June 15, and proposals are due on August 15. Please consider submitting a proposal; this would be a great way to represent AzCPA on a national level!

Technology Update

The AzCPA Coordinating Committee is looking into the possibility of using teleconference technology to increase accessibility and decrease the commute to AzCPA meetings! At this point, we're assessing whether the technology exists in Flagstaff, Tucson, and the Valley, and if it would be cost-effective to use it. As we continue to gather information, we'll provide updates to our members through the newsletter.
