2011 MCPA Executive Board Election Results Are In!

Thank you to all of the professionals who ran for this year's board. Congratualtions to all of our new officers (listed below). Remember, whether you are on the board or not, you can play an active role in the professional development of our state by getting in touch with any of the MCPA Board Members.

Crystal Hollenbaugh – President Elect

Crystal Hollenbaugh
Assistant Director of Residence Life for Judicial Affairs
Mount St. Mary’s University

I have been involved with MCPA since 2005. My involvement in MCPA over the years has afforded me rich experiences and the opportunity to meet pioneers in our field. I have served on various planning committees, have served as a Member at Large, and have been involved in the last four fall conferences in various capacities. I leave every event energized and wanting to get more involved. We have amazing reach to build upon the ACPA National Convention in Baltimore and begin to offer more to Maryland members. I would love to see more event partnerships with DC, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. I would like to spend time refining and offering a specific Community College track in our fall conference and maybe expanding to offer a Community College Conference in the future. As a member at large, my work with Support Staff members and the annual MCPA Support Staff conference has been super rewarding. Not to mention that it is a blast working with servant leaders on the MCPA Executive Board.

Tim Cherney – Membership Coordinator

My name is Tim Cherney, and I am currently an Assistant Director of Student Life at Loyola University Maryland.  I have served in this role for the past four years.  During that time I also served as a Member-At-Large for the MCPA executive board from 2008-2010 representing MCPA in the development of UMBC’s Annual Assessment Day Conference and co-chairing the 2010 MCPA Support Staff Conference.  This past year, I also served on the MCPA Fall Conference planning committee.
I have professionally been in the field since 2004, and I graduated with my M.S. in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Colorado State University in 2007.  I’m excited about the possible opportunity to return to the MCPA exec board in a new capacity. As the Membership Coordinator, I would intend to extend our membership and professional development opportunities to currently underrepresented colleagues in the organization: graduate students and professionals working at 2-year institutions.  MCPA has been a prominent contributor to my professional development for the past four years, and I would love the opportunity to work directly with current and new members to help afford them the same opportunities.

Edward Wright- Website Coordinator

I have been an active member of MCPA for 2 years and served Maryland as the Website Coordinator since 2009.  Currently, I am the Assistant Director for Admissions at Mount St. Mary’s University where I have primary responsibility for supervising over 150 students through various leadership positions, coordinating all new student recruitment programs and online/social media recruitment endeavors.  I also sit on various university committees.  Before coming to the Mount, I worked professionally in residence life where I supervised an RA staff and multiple living-learning communities.  I received my master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration from Canisius College, Buffalo, NY.  While there I held an assistantship in residence life and internships in student activities at Hilbert College and conference services at Eastern Illinois University.  I began my college education at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD where I was involved in residence life, campus activities, campus ministry, conference services, and admissions and held an internship with the dean of students at American College Dublin, Ireland.

If elected for another two year term, I look forward to the work I have started on the MCPA blog and continuing to improve our organization’s website.  I also look forward to new responsibilities at the Mount which will complement the work I do for MCPA.  MCPA welcomed me to Maryland and I have found a professional home here.  I hope to continue to serve the professionals of this state.

Joshua Hiscock – Treasurer
Josh

Greetings! My name is Josh Hiscock and I am the Graduate Coordinator for the Minor in Leadership Studies and the Coordinator for the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs at the University of Maryland – College Park where I am also a first-year doctoral student in the College Student Personnel Administration program. Originally from Orange, Massachusetts, I received my BA in American Studies from The George Washington University and the MA in Counseling & Personnel Services from the University of Maryland – College Park. During my professional career, I have had the pleasure to work at Boston University, Roger Williams University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in student activities, leadership development, and Greek life. I am currently involved with both NASPA and ACPA and have previously been involved with NACA.  My professional and research interests include student leadership development, campus programming, high-impact leadership practices, and transformational leadership.

I believe that my experience in programming and leadership development, coupled with my interest in mentoring and professional development for student affairs professionals, would make me a strong advocate and resource in MCPA. As a current graduate student, I would seek to engage more graduate students in the work of MCPA as both volunteers and event attendees. I believe the Association can provide a tremendous amount of professional development to individuals within Maryland  by increasing the caliber of its annual events and offering new opportunities such as webinars featuring guest presenters. I believe that my passion, collaborative style, and sense of humor would be an asset to the MCPA community.

Andrea Andrews – Member at Large
Description: Andrea.bmp
Greetings from McDaniel College!!

My name is Andrea N. Andrews and I am an Area Coordinator for the Office of Residence Life at McDaniel College in Westminster Maryland. This is my first year at McDaniel College.

After pursing my Bachelor degree in Psychology at Millersville University, I started my career as the Academic Counselor for the Millersville University TRIO Upward Bound Program. The Upward Bound program is one of the eight TRIO Programs funded by the United States Department of Education.

In the fall of 2007, I became a full time graduate student at West Chester University, pursing a M.S. in Higher Education Counseling /Student Affairs. During my three years at West Chester, I served as a Graduate Hall Director for the Office of Residence Life and Housing Services, an intern with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and assisted with the West Chester University Academic Development Summer Program. After graduating in May 2010, I moved to Maryland and started my current position with McDaniel College.

I was first introduced to MCPA this fall when I attended the 2010 Annual Fall Conference. I truly enjoyed my experience at the annual conference and I would like to be more involved in higher education/student affair on the state level. I am a motivated, high energy, detail oriented, and a self-starter with a creative edge. You can be assured that I will provide the same high level of continued dedication and service to this position as I have with my career.

Ashley McCartney – Member at Large
Ashley
Hello! My name is Ashley McCartney. I am an Area Coordinator for First Year Housing at McDaniel College. I have been at McDaniel since July of this past summer. I received my Masters of Education from Kent State University in Education Administration and Student Personnel. Before seeking my master’s degree, I was at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. I may not be the most energetic person you have ever met, but I truly do love my job and working with students. I like to be organized. I have a planner in which I track all of my meetings and responsibilities for that week in. This helps me stay on top of what needs to happen next; especially when that next thing now needs to be delayed due to some random housing crisis.  If I am involved in the planning of an event I like to ensure that all possibilities are considered so that there are no surprises in the future.

I love to learn about new things; which is the reason why I am so excited to have a career in a field that allows me to do so. Throughout my graduate work I tried to get my hands in as many cookie jars as I could. Throughout my time in higher education, undergraduate included, I have been working to expand my knowledge of the field in general. As such, my senior year in undergrad I branched out from the comfort of residence life to work for the Transitions Services at Clarion which ran the orientation programs for incoming freshmen. Also, during grad school I was able to work with both the activities office and career services. As well as explore as much of housing and residence life area as I wanted through my graduate assistantship at Lake Erie College. While this time allowed me to gain much knowledge on both of these areas, it really expanded my interest and passion in Residence Life and Housing.

My interest in becoming a Member-At-Large for MCPA’s Executive Board is to have a stronger connection to MCPA and to become more active in general within the field. I have always wanted to become more active in such an organization but have not had the chance in the past. This will serve as my first step into making a difference in the field.
